Grove City, Ohio – The Somali American community in Columbus came together this weekend to show their strong support for Mohamed Omar, a 24-year-old community organizer and first-time candidate running for Grove City Council in Ohio.
Omar, who represents a new generation of Somali Americans stepping into leadership, has become a symbol of youth empowerment and civic engagement. His campaign focuses on community inclusion, small business growth, affordable housing, and strengthening youth programs within Grove City.
“I stand before you tonight humbled by the fact that this campaign is not just about me,” Omar shared passionately. “It is about all of us. It is about every single person in this room that represents a minority community, that represents the Somali community. It’s about what it means for a community that has always worked hard but has not always been recognized or seen.”
The event, hosted by Deqa Haji — a nurse, entrepreneur, and respected community leader brought together Somali professionals, elders, and youth in a show of unity and pride.
“When we stand behind our youth, we are standing behind our future,” said Deqa Haji during her remarks. “As a young man, Mohamed Omar has already demonstrated qualities of leadership that inspire all of us.”
The evening highlighted the growing political awareness among Somali Americans in Central Ohio, emphasizing the importance of civic participation and representation. Many attendees described Mohamed’s candidacy as a turning point for the community, symbolizing the entrance of a new generation into local leadership.
The election for Grove City Council is set to take place later this November, and Omar’s campaign team has been encouraging residents, particularly young voters and new Americans to register and participate in the democratic process.
As the campaign gains momentum, Somali People TV will continue to follow Mohamed Omar’s journey, covering community events, voter engagement efforts, and the growing impact of Somali American leaders in Ohio politics.
